Can't get mic to work, tried _everything_

[ Edited ]

I have a logitech Casque USB headset.

In the PS3 Accessory->audio settings I have the settings set up correctly and sensitivity on 5. I can hear myself talk here. Works well on PC too.

In MAG audio settings, I have mic sensitivity at 100

I have NAT type 2(someone said type 3 would cause problems)

I have tried connecting it to another USB port.

I have restarted PS3 several times.

I have tried muting and unmuting the mic several times from both the D-pad up and from the cord.

I have tried using both Wired and Wireless connection.

I have tried yelling at both the PS3 and the headset, calling both "stupid ****s"

However, when I try to talk, only the "picture of the headset"-icon, and not the speech bubble one. People also cannot hear me in the game.

I have been battling with this for several days now and I'm out of ideas of what to try next.

If the game is reacting to you talking(ie. the headset icon next to your name when you talk, the type of icon doesnt matter at this point as long as it shows up when you talk, it sometimes doesn't show up unless you talk longer than a couple secs) that sounds like a network issue... What type of router do you have?  Cable or DSL? PS3 network settings?

Re: Can't get mic to work, tried _everything_

It could very well be your router.

Make sure you either open all the ports they list in the sticky or else assign a static IP to your PS3 then make that IP the DMZ host.  DMZ is a last ditch effort that will expose the PS3 to the internet with no restrictions.

Who knows though, I had problems with my PS3 bluetooth mic in the beginning and nobody seemed to hear me but it could have just been a bunch of losers who wouldn't talk.

My mic has been working fine for the past week and a half now.

You will probably have to open some of the ports, most major router manufacturers started doing this for you by default back in the original xbox days, but something like this may not have it... The easy solution, is if you have either DMZ or a static NAT(where requests to unassigned ports all get forwarded to a default device instead of getting blocked) you can set it to your ps3.  The more complex solution is to change your ps3 to a static ip and forward the ports found here.

I remember reading something about having to wait to turn your bluetooth mic on till after the game has started up, but that may already be resolved... and I dont think it applied to USB mics, which it sounds like is the issue here...

Thanks alot, haven't gotten it to work yet, but atleast now I have a strong idea about where the problem probably is.

Googled a bit and found this guide to setup ps3 to use DMZ, trying to go through it now to see if I can get it to work, otherwise I guess I'll just buy a new modem-router instead

Re: Can't get mic to work, tried _everything_

I had an issue where my mic only started working when I went to video chat. There it detected that I did not have a device setup and that I could do so. That's when it gave me the option to select my USB headset.

Re: Can't get mic to work, tried _everything_

Depends on your requirements for a router, but the cheapest solution is the Linksys WRT54G(S).  It has been around forever, and is decently cheap.  If you are looking for a new, top of the line I would suggest the Netgear WNDR3700, this is the one I have at home and it is the most stable and powerful router I have ever owned.  I'm sorry I couldn't be more helpful with your current router, but I have never even seen this one before.  Before you go and buy a new router, try one thing though... Play with your ps3 plugged directly into your modem.

Re: Can't get mic to work, tried _everything_

The one I got is a combined router-modem. You was able to get it for free in finland for a while(the idea being that your connection is also shared to others, who can purchase internet time from the wippies people to connect to internet via your wi-fi), so it's quite common in here. It is better known by some other name, but I was unable to find the name with the quick search I did.

Purchasing a new one tomorrow, will report here if the new router-modem(getting a buffalo or telewell one, those are the ones a local store had in stock) fixes the problem.
